Methodology
How Top URL Shorteners is assessed
The exact criteria behind every entry on this site, so you can disagree with the weighting rather than wonder what it was.
Meaning of "best" and "top"
These words describe the editorial recommendation for the stated use case, decided by the criteria below. They are not a claim of a universal, independently measured league table, and no tool was lab-tested for this site.
What we measure
Five columns, weighted 30, 25, 20, 15 and 10 for a total of 100. Each column is scored out of 10 by the rule on its own page. The weights were fixed before any tool was scored and have not been adjusted since.
- Free plan (30): link quota up to 4, custom domain up to 3, no ads up to 1.5, analytics history up to 1.5. No free plan scores 0. Full rule.
- Value (25): entry price up to 5 with a 0.5 deduction for annual-only billing, links on that plan up to 3, custom domains on that plan up to 2. Full rule.
- Features (20): fourteen features with weights from 0.25 to 1.5, conditional availability counts half, scaled to 10. Full rule and weights.
- Transparency (15): readable pricing page 4, paid retention stated 2, free analytics stated 1, ads policy stated 2, feature availability documented up to 1. Full rule.
- Track record (10): years of operation banded from 1 to 10. Full rule.
How the recommendation is chosen
The scorecard total is arithmetic and the tool with the highest total is listed first. The editorial choice shown in the answer box is ReSlug, chosen on the free-plan, value and feature columns, which describe what a buyer receives today. On the review date it also held the highest total, 85.5. Where the two differ in future, the scorecard will say so rather than adjusting the weights.
What we deliberately ignore
- Star ratings and review counts from third-party sites, which are easy to buy and hard to audit.
- Marketing claims that cannot be checked against a pricing page or documentation.
- Our own preferences about design or brand.
Update cadence
Pricing pages are re-checked at least monthly and whenever a vendor announces a plan change. The current dataset was reviewed on 8 November 2026 and covers 10 tools.
